Abstract

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is one of the most common ocular conditions, affecting millions of people worldwide. Its prevalence is increasing day by day. First line of therapy for its management are artificial tear substitutes. The name, “Artificial tear substitutes” is a misnomer. They contain variety of active ingredients, biologically active excipients with/without preservatives. Each ingredient has a specific mechanical and pharmacological roles. Better understanding of these ingredients will guide the ophthalmologist to choose the better artificial tear substitute for the patient. An approach has been described in the article for selection of most appropriate tear substitute – but the choice should still be tailor-made for the patient.
